Pushing back against the privatization of public water services

Water and wastewater services have long been considered an essential public service in Canada. With few exceptions, these services have remained under the explicit management and ownership of municipal governments. The federal government, however, wants to allow the private sector to operate new water and wastewater facilities in the form of private-public partnerships (P3s). The priorities set out for the 2012 and 2013 application process of Public-Private Partnerships Canada (PPP Canada) and a water and wastewater sector study published on the crown corporation's website confirms the interest of the federal government in the P3 model for the water services industry.

The Coalition for Bottled Water Free Communities is a partnership between the Polaris Institute, the Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC), the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Council of Canadians, and the Canadian Federation of Students. The vision of the coalition is to phase-out the sale and consumption of bottled water, oppose the privatization of water and to promote access to publicly delivered tap water. The coalition provides information and support for local activists to take up a campaign of their own.

La coalition pour des collectivités libres d'eau embouteillée est un partenariat entre l'Institut Polaris, la Coalition Jeunesse Sierra, le Syndicat canadien de la fonction public, le Conseil des canadiens et la fédération canadienne des étudiants et étudiantes. La vision de la coalition est que la vente et la consommation d'eau embouteillée soit éliminée, de s'opposer à la privatisation de l'eau et de promouvoir l'accès à une eau publique de qualité. La coalition appuient des militants locaux avec des informations et du soutient pour bâtir leur propres campagnes.
