145 groups: Make Enforced Disappearance of Sombath Somphone Central to Lao UPR!


Press Release: The Sombath Initiative

A petition spearheaded by the Sombath Initiative calls on governments and the UN Human Rights Council to put the enforced disappearance of Sombath Somphone at the centre of the Universal Periodic Review for the Lao PDR.

Endorsed by 145 organisations from six continents, and sent to over 40 missions to the United Nations in Geneva, the petition asserts the disappearance of Sombath Somphone parallels a decisive reversal in democratic space, signals a deterioration of the human rights situation throughout the country, and is the most visible manifestation of a broader and deeper malaise pervading the Lao PDR.

Montreal, QC -­ Today, over 60 environmental and community groups from across Canada sent a letter to Peter Watson, head of the National Energy Board, demanding that the NEB include climate change in its review of the Energy East project. This letter comes on addition to 60,000 messages sent from people all across Canada to the NEB calling for a climate review.

Canadian Youth Delegation Open Letter to Government


To the Government of Canada: 

We are the Canadian Youth Delegation, supported by more than sixty environmental non-profits, labour groups, and youth organizations. We are youth from across Canada who are attending the upcoming UN international climate change negotiations (COP 20) in Lima, Peru. As we prepare for our participation at the negotiations, we realize how important it is for us to introduce ourselves and tell you that we refuse to tolerate the inaction of the Canadian Government when it comes to climate change. We intend to hold you accountable for the decisions you make at COP 20.

Aux autorités politiques fédérales, régionales et locales du Mexique,

Nous sommes profondément indignés-es par les évènements survenus récemment au Mexique. Le 30 juin 2014 à Tlatlaya, État du Mexique, 22 personnes sont mortes, dont 15 exécutées par l’armée, qui fait actuellement l’objet de poursuites judiciaires. Les 26 et 27 septembre 2014, un véritable massacre a été commis par la police municipale et des hommes armés qui selon les témoins ayant survécu appartiendraient au groupe Guerreros Unidos.
